What is adaptability?
Adaptability is the ability to quickly make decisions, be flexible and creative in new circumstances. This is not an innate gift, but a skill that we can and should develop every day. Many people think that adaptability is an innate quality but this is not entirely true… each of us can become more adaptive by destroying the myth of our exceptional nature.
How to develop adaptability?
* Rethinking the usual. Start small: change your route to work, try a new dinner recipe, or change your morning routine. These small steps teach your brain to be flexible.
* The art of risk taking. Don’t be afraid to take risks. Try something new at work even if it seems difficult. Taking risks helps us get out of our comfort zone and stretches the boundaries of what is possible.
* Our environment influences us. Connect with people who inspire you. Read books, watch movies, and listen to podcasts that expand your vision of the world.
* Continuous training. Never stop learning. New knowledge and skills are the path to mental flexibility.
* Live without a navigator. Try to find a new place without GPS. This exercise not only develops your spatial awareness, but also teaches you to trust your intuitive abilities and decisions.
* Development of strategies. Constantly think about different scenarios and create plans based on them. Even if in reality you might act differently than your plan, this exercise will train your brain to think flexibly.

*If you encounter a problem, try listing a few different ways to solve it. The ability to look at problem situations from different angles and find not one but several solutions reduces anxiety when faced with unforeseen circumstances. Experiment and test your ideas.
* Set goals. For example if you feel like your nonverbal communication skills have room to improve or you tend to procrastinate when you’re expected to complete difficult tasks, you can set a goal to work on every aspect of your skills to improve your overall ability to adapt to change.
* Strive for new knowledge. People who are curious, inquisitive, and stay informed tend to be able to adapt to changing conditions more easily and successfully. This means that you need to strive to obtain new information on various areas of your life. Read about new technologies, attend seminars, learn new things, interact with people who have different points of view, learn from those people, read what they read and etc.
* Take risks. Progress does not come without risk. For some, the idea of risk is so uncomfortable that they run away from it as quickly as they can, but risk is a key part of adaptation. It’s enough to start small and raise the bar until you feel that you can more easily adapt to change.
* Observe and list all changes in your environment. Make a list of these changes, study it and figure out what you need to learn in order to be prepared for future changes.
* Reorganization. Change the usual environment in your room or workspace. Find a new use for an old tool, piece of clothing, appliance, etc. Change your daily routine. All this will help you develop the skill of adaptability.
